About Dr. Martens

Dr. Martens could be the stuff of legends. It all began near Munich, Germany in 1945 when Dr. Klaus Maertens injured his foot inside a skiing accident in the Bavarian Alps. To make walking easier during the healing process, he created a shoe with the air-cushioned sole. Using old rubber tires, he constructed soles which in fact had air trapped within closed compartments. He showed his prototype to his engineer/inventor friend, Dr. Herbert Funck, and together they thought we would develop and convey the shoes. Not merely did the shoe solve the doctor’s immediate problem, nevertheless it also started to sell well in Germany.

By 1959 the 2 decided which they needed an organization to make and distribute the shoes, then called Dr. Maertens, in other parts with the world. At first, many manufacturers rejected the concept of an air cushioned sole being a short-lived gimmick. However, the R. Griggs Group, located inside the village of Wollaston in England, thought we would complement using the idea by creating the first work boot while using revolutionary sole. On the firstly April 1960, the first cherry red eight-eyelet work boot was produced and named 1460 (1/4/60). To sell the manufacturer better in England, the name was anglicized to Dr. Martens. The range was branded AirWair as well as the rest is history.
The supple leather belies the tough steel toe cap hidden beneath. The AirWair hang tag and yellow welt stitch declare this is often a Dr. Martens boot. This shoe can be a fashion steel toe and it is non-safety rated.
